Very good condition short saw maker-marked on the upper left top ridge by Henry Disston of Philadelphia along with “cast steel” and “warranted,” with his patriotic brass maker’s disk with eagle and stars inserted over one of the screws securing the blade to the handle, and stamped “US” on the same side in the wood handle. These were short- this has a 10” blade- and were used to cut artillery time fuses to the correct length to ensure the round exploded at the right point- in the case of case shot, for instance, above and just in front of the target. The metal is smooth, showing as a silver gray mixed with darker gray spots, some of which show some shallow brown corrosion. The teeth are very good. The wood handle has good color and finish showing just minor dark stains and handling marks. See the Time-Life Echoes of Glory series volume “Arms and Equipment of the Union” page 305 bottom right for a similar example. [sr][ph:m]
