These are described in the 1862 Ordnance Manual under artillery harness. Limbers and caissons were normally drawn by six horses in pairs- the lead, swing and wheel horses, the latter with the pole of the limber extending forward between them. These pads were fastened to the end of the pole to prevent it from injuring one of the horses in front.

This is an excellent example with the fastening pin in place and good finish to the leather, which shows brown and olive green tones.   [sr][ph:m]
