A good example of the time-fuse used in mortar rounds. Targeting narrow entrenchments or the relatively small area of a fortification a mortar crew had to be precise in gauging trajectory, propellant charges, and time-fuses in hopes of getting the round to explode not only on the target, but at just the right height to do maximum damage if they were aiming for enemy personnel. This is a simple, tapering wood cylinder, 6.25-inches long, containing a powder charge, with lines scored along it, that would be cut to properly adjust the burn time and then inserted into the fuse adapter of the shell.  [sr][ph:L]
