This wood crate remains in very good, mostly original condition. It measures approximately 20” long x 13” wide x 11.5” tall including original lid. Constructed of 1.25” thick boards with dovetailed corners. One-inch-thick handles on both ends, each drilled to have rope handles; one of the original rope handles remains.

Original lid shows where six nails were used to seal it. Original stenciling remains on the inside of the lid, “WATERTOWN ARSENAL / NOV. 1862”. Upon transition into a travel trunk, two iron hinges were added as well as a small interior box lock. Only the mortise for the lock remains – no lock. A narrow leather strap was also added as a “stop” for the lid.

The exterior was painted olive drab leaving a natural interior. Approximately 60% of the olive drab paint remains. One face of the crate features scattered remnants of an address stenciled in white; ending with “MISS”[ISSIPPI]. Both ends also still retain scattered remnants of stenciling. One end, in original white, has “[FIXED AMM’N] / 8 ____ ROUNDS / [unreadable] / SOLID SHOT”. The opposite end “FIXED AMM’N” and two other lines of text in original white with over “GOOD MUSKET / ROUNDED [unreadable]” in black which may be a Bannerman’s “parts box” stencil. More of the stenciling could likely be deciphered given time and the proper lighting.

All wood remains solid and strong. Lid is loose from the hinges. A nice artillery ammunition crate / soldier’s trunk.  [jet][ph:L]
