This is a scarce piece of Civil War artillery related leather. This is a pendulum hausse sight case. Pendulum Hausse sights were weighted brass pieces that were mounted on the breech of a cannon and used by artillerymen to measure the angles of their cannons.
This is the fine leather case in which the instrument was carried. It is the russet leather carrying case with no shoulder sling missing. The leather shows light wear overall. Leather is somewhat stiff but the top flap still opens easily. All stitching is good and unbroken. The four copper rivets that once attached a narrow shoulder sling strap are found on the back. The top flap of the case has a tab that fits through a leather keeper to hold it closed. [jet] [ph:L]
