This is a scarce piece of Civil War artillery related leather. This is a pendulum hausse sight case. Pendulum Hausse sights were weighted brass pieces that were mounted on the breech of a cannon and used by artillerymen to measure the angles of their cannons.
This is the fine leather case in which the instrument was carried. It is the russet leather carrying case with shoulder sling still attached. The leather shows light wear overall with the most distress showing as surface cracks on the strap and on the backside of the case. Waxy remnants of some old leather treatments are found overall and should easily be cleaned away. Leather remains supple and all stitching is good and unbroken. Sling is attached to the case by four copper rivets. The top flap of the case has a tab that fits through a leather keeper to hold it closed. [jet] [ph:L]
