Here is an original 12-pounder cannon ball still strapped to its wood sabot. Iron cannon ball complete with an unpunched Bormann time fuse. The fuse has some minor dents from handling and storage, but numbers and lines on the fuse remain generally visible. There are two gouges along the sides of the central channel where it appears someone attempted to unscrew the fuse. Iron is smooth and in good condition. There is a small drill hole on one side where the shell was unloaded and is now safe.
Tin straps secure the ball to the turned wood sabot. The four strap “legs” are attached at the top to a circular strip of tin setting around the fuse. They extend along the body of the ball and are nailed to the sabot. The straps exhibit some minor surface rust but are in overall very good condition.
The wood sabot remains solid and strong with no splits or damage. A single groove cut around the base was a place to tie the powder bag.
A rarely seen “complete” Bormann cannon ball and sabot. From the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
