Made of heavy brass, these are constructed like a pair of dividers, with the arms pivoting around a round base. This has a nice, undisturbed, aged patina, and clear markings that include sharp arsenal maker’s markings on one arm: “U.S. / WATERVLIET / ARSENAL.” These were intended to gauge the diameter of a cannon bore, with the points outward, or a projectile, with the points inward, but could also measure the length of time-fuzes and fuze-plugs. Each arm is crisply marked with scales in inches and angles in degrees, as is the round base, which is marked from 0 to 90, and then back down again, and the tips of the arms have steel points of each arm to prevent wear and keep the measurements accurate. The condition is very good with a uniform, undisturbed aged tone to the brass. We see a short narrow crack on the round base of the upper arm at the pivot, but it does go all the way through and the metal is stable.
These are key pieces in any artillery display, making very clear the connection between mathematics and geometry with the art and science of gunnery, and are fairly scarce, most being sold for scrap after the guns and ammunition they serviced went out of use. [sr][ph:L]
