A nicely marked and dated example. Made of heavy leather secured by copper rivets, these  are described in the 1862 Ordnance Manual under artillery harness. Limbers and caissons were normally drawn by six horses in pairs- the lead, swing and wheel horses, the latter with the pole of the limber extending forward between them. These pads were fastened to the end of the pole to prevent it from gouging or injuring the flanks of one of the wheel horses or those in front on them.

An essential piece in any artillery collection, this is an excellent example with the fastening pin in place and good finish to the leather, which shows brown and olive green tones.  [sr][ph:L]
