This comes from an old and well-respected collection that includes a lot of material bought directly off Bannerman’s Island or through their Blue Point Long Island operation, opened after they closed their New York City store. Coming from the artillery portion of that collection, this is a Civil War artillery wood pass box used in fortifications and emplacements for heavy guns to carry the powder charge from the magazine to the gun. Needless to say, it was rather important to prevent any sparks, flying embers or debris from cannon firing in the fort from igniting any loose powder or fresh cartridges and these wood boxes with carrying handle and hinged side panel served that purpose for the heavy guns, much as the gunner’s haversack did for field artillery. We show part of a photo of a 24-Pdr. siege gun and its crew in Fort Corcoran at Alexandria, with one of the crew standing at left holding one of these at his side, and another photo of 100-Pdr Parrott crew, with a crew member carrying one horizontally just below the muzzle.
This measures 15 5/8 x 7 ½ x 8 3/8 inches and is in very good condition, missing the hinged side/lid, but with its fastening hook in place and the wood carrying handle complete and secure on top. The olive-green paint is largely intact, showing some losses, rubs and expected wear, with a little red and some white paint that rubbed off from something else. One side has been stenciled in white “paint brushes,” which is an old Bannerman addition from having used it themselves as a storage box. This could be removed, but is an interesting bit of its history. [sr][ph:L]
