Siege mortars became increasingly important as the Civil War progressed and field armies came to rely more on field fortifications and entrenchments, battle lines became static and campaigns devolved into siege operations against more substantial works- early on at Port Hudson, Vicksburg and elsewhere and, of course, later on the Richmond-Petersburg front. With their high angle of fire, mortars could lob projectiles over fortifications and even into entrenchments - given a good deal of calculation, correction by observers, and no small bit of luck.

This is a very good muzzle tompion for a US Model 1841 10-Inch Mortar, either siege or seacoast, both firing the same 90-pound (plus or minus) projectiles, but with the seacoast version being vastly heavier so as withstand heavier charges and achieve greater range, and the siege version still heavy, but light enough for transport in the siege train of a field army. The tompions served to keep dirt and debris out of the bores when not in use are made of wood, with wider cap to fit the muzzle and narrower plug to seal the bore. The muzzle cap retains much of its original paint and the iron carrying ring and staple are still in place. The bottom, plug portion has natural color and measures 10-inches in diameter, confirming the type of gun. This comes from the artillery portion of an old and well-respected collection, much of which was purchased from Bannerman’s, the renowned military surplus dealership at a time when it could be obtained from their famous island itself and from their Blue Point Long Island establishment.

The condition is very good, showing just minor wear and some small chips to the paint. Please see our photos.
