This is a postwar US artillery sponge cover made of canvas with a strap at top for a handle and knotted cord running along the bottom to tighten it over the sponge head of an artillery rammer. The canvas is white, now a slightly off-white with minor soiling and a couple of small stains, boldly stenciled in black, “U.S. / 12 PDR. / GUN.”

The 12-Pounder Napoleon was a classic Civil War field-piece that remained in service for a number of years after the war. Implements for serving it included the sponge staff and rammer, the sponge being soaked in water from the sponge bucket positioned on the ground near the muzzle of the gun, the idea being to extinguish any sparks or flaming debris left from a previous round before inserting and ramming home the next round with it its attached propellant charge.   [sr] [ph:L]
