An excellent condition Civil War artillery vent cover. These were strapped around the breech of the cannon barrel when the piece was not in use to keep the vent free of debris. This is made of black leather, using a two-piece strap and buckle to secure over the vent a flat rectangular covering piece of leather that has a brass stud in the center, which would fit the vent itself to keep the cover in place. The long portion of the strap is 32” overall, including the sewn down portion, and the short section with buckle is 6-1/2” with the rectangular cover piece 6” X 4.”

Though we show a Civil War photo of a field gun with vent cover on the breech- a little indistinct, but the strap clear enough around the breech.   [sr] [ph:L]
