Although percussion and friction primers had long been in use in the artillery, it was still deemed wise to keep a back-up. Indeed, at least one US battery in the Mexican War had to fall back on old methods in action when their primers failed. This is an excellent example of an artillery linstock that recently came to us from the artillery portion of an old collection containing many items originally purchased from Bannerman’s, either directly off the island or from their Blue Point Long Island operation.

This is complete and in very good condition, with nice untouched dark olive paint showing just age and a few rubs, the spike and ferrule in place at the bottom, for planting it in the ground, and with the hole and cross bolt in place at the top. This was kept on hand for use with a length of slow-match, a slow burning flammable rope, fed through the hole and around the crossbolt, that could be applied directly to an cannon’s vent if the primer failed for some reason. This was a companion piece to the portfire, using a similar wood stock (and both tools often confused,) but designed to hold a long paper wrapped cylinder filled with a compound of nitre, sulphur and mealed powder that would burn slowly and be inextinguishable by water, making sure a flame would be available to a gun crew even in inclement weather. In theory, the linstock would take the flame from the portfire if necessary, but they both worked toward the same end and either might be used to ignite the cannon’s priming directly if push came to shove. Whatever the circumstances, however, it was necessary that if used they be planted in the ground some distance from the limbers and caissons to avoid accidents.

This is an essential piece in any Civil War artillery collection or display. They do not come along often. We are pleased to be able to offer this one and the condition will not disappoint.   [SR][ph:L]
