Old cardboard box for 50 brass friction primers used for firing cannons. Likely dates to late 19^th century.

Cardboard package measures 4.5” x 2.75” x 2”. Corners are reinforced with staples. Separate lid has printed label pasted to top. The label on the box features a line drawing of a friction primer alongside bilingual text in German and French: "50 Messingschlagröhren." (German), and "Étoupilles en laiton." (French).

These tubes were inserted into the vent of a cannon's breech. When the lanyard was pulled, the friction mechanism inside the brass tube ignited a small flash charge, which then traveled down into the main chamber to fire the gunpowder propellant.

Brass primers are packed ten to a layer between cotton pads. We have not disturbed the whole box, but to the best of ability, we believe there are 46 pieces remaining.

The box shows wear and soiling, but remains completely solid and strong. [jet][ph:L]
