A scarce muzzle tompion that would fit the 2.9” Parrott or 3” Ordnance Rifle. This is made of tinned iron with wide rim around the top to help seal the bore and keep out dirt and debris when not in use and has a central iron bolt running through it with ring on the top to pull or secure it. The iron bolt and ring show some surface rust and the tinned iron shows mostly gray with some stains, a few dents, and some rusting to the underlying iron where the tinned surface was worn.
This comes from the artillery section of an old and respected collection, much of which came from Bannerman’s island or their Blue Point Long Island operation. We off several larger tinned iron tompions for larger guns elsewhere and some wooden ones as well. The tinned iron was certainly lighter than the wood and perhaps thought less likely to draw or retain moisture that might damage iron barrels. [sr][ph:L]
