A very scarce piece of ephemera- an original Civil War cardboard box with lid bearing a green paper label printed in black “100 / FRICTION PRIMERS.” The lower portion of the label shows some rubbing and staining and perhaps bore a maker’s name or date of manufacture, but the upper portion noting the contents is sharp, legible and has good eye-appeal. The paper wrapping of the box portion shows some water stains at the bottom and some peeling on the underside, but the box and lid are solid and the label legible. And, the box still contains some 37 original friction primers, a few showing some corrosion or breaks. The box measures 3” x 3” x 2 ¼”.

This comes from the artillery portion of an old and respected Civil War collection, much of which was purchased directly from Bannerman’s, off the island itself or from their Blue Point Long Island operation, opened after the closure of their NY City store and museum. Collectors will most likely be familiar with their vast offerings from the reprint of their 1927 catalog. This has strong eye-appeal from the label and would make a nice addition to an artillery display. The smaller packs of primers are out there. A box like this is a rare survivor.
