A rectangular tinned-iron box with lid embossed at center with the crossed cannon barrels and flaming bomb of the US Ordnance Department, with “100 FRICTION PRIMERS” in an arc of raised letters above it. The box is solid, showing gray overall, with the lid, hinge, and small tab all in place. It measures 4 ½” x 2 ¾” x 2 ¼”.

This has a good deal of eye-appeal and would add to any display of artillery gear and implements. We also offer elsewhere a green cardboard shipping box for 100 friction primers. Needless to say, a tinned-iron box would be a robust alternative for field use.

This comes from the artillery portion of an old and respected Civil War collection, much of which was purchased from Bannerman’s, off the island itself or from their Blue Point Long Island operation. Collectors will most likely be familiar with their vast offerings from the reprint of their 1927 catalog. Smaller packs of friction primers, essential for firing the piece,  are out there and by comparison a box like this is a rare survivor. Please see our photos.  [sr][ph:L]
