A complete, good condition US Navy ring gauge for 8-Inch shells, a caliber widely used during the war in Dahlgren guns, Rodmans, Columbiads, siege howitzers and mortars, etc. These gauges were used for inspection of shot and shell, and were important tools for  personnel responsible for shipping the right projectiles to the right guns in the right location. Needless to say, their use would have been of even greater importance to a gun crew. They would have been particularly handy given the huge stacks artillery projectiles seen in period photos of ordnance yards.

This one was to determine or confirm shells for 8-Inch guns and is clearly stamped on the lower part of the ring on one side: “8 in. STRAPPED SHELL GAUGE / 7.98” indicating its theoretical and actual diameter and that it was affixed to a sabot. On the other side it is stamped, “ORD. YARD U.S.N.Y.W./ 1867 / K.R.B / [anchor]” giving the location: U.S. Navy Yard Washington, the date of production, inspector’s initials, and USN property anchor stamp.

This is complete and in good condition. The wood grip and brass ferrule are in place on the handle and the ring has no cracks or chips. The wood shows some dings and minor chips from handling and storage. The brass has a dark, aged patina. The ring is a mix of muted silver and gray, with some dark gray stains and some thin brown, mostly thin, with some minor crustiness here and there. The markings are legible.   [sr][ph:L]
