This carrying case for an artillery pendulum hausse is in superior condition and crisply marked. It is complete with two-piece shoulder strap with adjusting buckle and retaining loop, full-length latch tab extension of the cover, and short retaining strap. This is in solid condition with tight seams, is made of light-brown leather that has an pleasing smooth finish with showing only some minor scrapes and some darker stains near the bottom, and is crisply marked on the flap, “U.S. / ARSENAL / ST. LOUIS.” We see just some finish loss on the strap from flexing and a touch of verdigris on the rivets securing the strap to the back of the case. Please see our photos.

The pendulum hausse rear sight was the often-used replacement for the tangent scale rear sight that needed the cannon barrel trunnions to be level, something unlikely to encountered much in field conditions. It was placed in an open, forked yoke or rest on cannon breech, suspended from the short crosspiece with rounded arms that allowed the lead-filled disk at bottom to keep the upper, split, brass bar vertical, with the movable slider able to be adjusted for sighting and elevation using the increments marked along the right side. Given the different ranges, etc., of the various field guns, these sights are calibrated to specific calibers and models of guns. The size of this case suggests it held the pendulum hausse for a 12-pounder Mountain Howitzer.
