Excellent condition tarred canvas sponge cover with ties for use with an 8-Inch mortar. Though classified as a siege mortar, these were light enough for field service, the mortar weighing a bit over 900 pounds and its bed the same, and were transported in the “heavy siege train,” an organization that saw use when confronting an enemy behind substantial field works or fortifications where not just heavier calibers were useful, but the ability to throw shells at a high angle of trajectory to land among troops protected from direct fire by the fortifications or in entrenchments. The 8-inch mortar could hurl a 44-pound shell about 2,200 yards.

As with any muzzle-loading cannon, sponging out the bore between shots was an essential safety measure to avoid a premature discharge if residual burning debris should ignite the propellant powder charge of the next round. Gun crews were incessantly drilled not only for speed, but to get the loading sequence right, for everyone’s safety except the intended target. Like most artillery gear, sponge staffs and the sponges themselves were carefully maintained to assure maximum efficiency.

This is a scarce piece in great condition with no holes or tears and the ties still with it. It also bears a collector’s note rather proudly noting he had purchased it from someone who had no idea what it was.   [sr] [ph:L]
