This pattern of iron bucket is specified in Civil War US ordnance manuals for use with the portable or “travelling” forge. Usually attached to a limber for transportation, the portable forge, was essentially a small blacksmith shop on wheels carrying all the necessary tools and equipment needed by artificers and farriers for blacksmith work in the repair and maintenance of wagons and other horse-drawn vehicles as well as for horse-shoeing and other ironwork.

Civil War military iron buckets show up in several forms. Most often seen are sponge buckets for artillery crewmen and the “tar” or grease buckets, both of which have turned top edges and lids. This one has an open top and measures 8-1/2” tall and 8-1/4” in diameter and is reinforced around the upper edge by a 1” wide band. These measurements are slightly larger than those given in the 1862 Ordnance Manual (7 X 6.8 inches with .5 inch band,) but the 1861 Ordnance manual (p.140) is far less specific, saying simply, “The Forge Bucket is of sheet iron, stiffened with a band at top, and furnished with a handle.” We also show a Gardner photo of a travelling forge parked at Cumberland Landing in May 1862, with its anvil sitting to one side and one of these buckets on the ground next to its wheel.

We should note that about twenty years ago a number of newly-made, artificially aged, primitive looking iron buckets were imported to the U.S. and put on the antiques market. This is not one of those, which differed in several respects, the most notable being a wide flange projecting around the bottom edge.   [sr][ph:m]
