A crisply marked carrying case for an artillery pendulum hausse with inspector’s initials, arsenal marking and designation for specific use with a 12-Pounder Gun- the well-known Napoleon fieldpiece. The narrow shoulder strap was broken off with only a couple of inches on either side still with the case, and one of those just hanging by a thread. The case itself, however, is complete and solid with good seams, integral fastening tab, and short, retaining keeper strap. The inspector’s initials, “S.T.O.” are crisply marked, vertically, between the top of the case and the keeper strap. Further down in smaller letters is horizontally stamped, “U.S. / WATERVLIET / ARSENAL” with “12 PDr.” separately applied is slightly smaller letters just below.

The pendulum hausse, sometimes called the “Russian hausse” from its early adoption by that army, was a brass, lead-weighted, pivoting rear sight that replaced the tangent scale rear sight, which needed the cannon barrel trunnions to be level, something unlikely to encountered much in field conditions. It was placed in an open, forked yoke or rest on cannon breech, suspended from the short crosspiece toggle with rounded arms that allowed the lead-filled disk at bottom, with the help of gravity, to keep the upper, split, brass bar vertical, with the movable slider able to be adjusted for sighting and elevation using the increments marked along the sides.

For reference we include an excerpt of Gibbon’s 1860 Artillerist’s Manual discussion of the pendulum hausse with mention of its carrying case. See also the artillery section of Arms and Equipment of the Union for one of these, albeit intended for a different artillery piece. The 12 Pounder Gun, the “Napoleon,” was a classic fieldpiece in the Civil War, widely used by both sides, in both the east and western theatres of war. Despite the missing shoulder strap, this displays nicely, especially with its sharp markings.   [sr][ph:L]
