These were used in filling shells with powder from a powder measure. This measures 6” long overall with the top measuring 4-1/2” in diameter. It is simply constructed of two pieces and is fitted with a suspension ring at the upper edge, which is turned over. It hardly needs remarking that when filling shells with gun powder, a funnel made of copper rather than iron that might strike a spark was probably a wise precaution. Gibbon, Artillerist’s Manual, describes them simply: “Funnel. — This is made of sheet-copper, and is used for pouring the charges from the powder-measure into the shell. It is of the ordinary shape, the upper edge being turned over, outwards, to stiffen it.”
This is in excellent shape with a pleasing, untouched, mellow, aged patina, tight folded and soldered seams, with just some minor dents along the upper rim and at the very tip of the nozzle.
This comes from the artillery portion of an old and well-respected collection we recently acquired. Much of the artillery portion was acquired in the early 1960s directly off Bannerman’s Island or through their Blue Point, Long Island, operation and includes some very scarce pieces that few thought to preserve or were able to do so. Please see our other offerings for more from this collection. [sr] [ph:L]
