This comes from an interesting group of artillery material, much of which was acquired from Bannerman’s Island or their Blue Point, Long Island, operation in the early 1960s and this piece is accompanied by the collector’s note that he obtained it from the island in 1965, when it was still possible to acquire material at that location through Bannerman’s manager. This is a tinned iron canister with metal top and wood bottom, measuring 3-3/8” tall and 2-5/8” in diameter. The metal has gray and brown crusty surface of light rust, but preserves much of the original label, which is fragile and flaking, but reads: “100 serrated wires with friction primers for sea coast cannon with either old or new model vents.”

This was displayed in the collection next to a shallow round wood tray, about the same diameter as the canister and 1-5/8” tall containing about fifty arrowhead-pointed serrated wires standing upright, each about 1-/12” long. Given the dimensions of the wood tray and that the bottom of the canister is also wood, we expect this tray rested on another in the bottom of the canister that likely held another fifty, to make the total given on the label, some of which at least are still in there.  The canister is fragile, with part of the band around the top having sprung loose slightly and we have not tried to open it, though it is obvious in handling it that there are at least some of these primers still inside.

Seacoast guns and mortars were, needless to say, heavy pieces of large caliber intended for use at very long range and remained in place in many coastal forts as part of national defense for many years after the war until replaced by more modern steel guns. This is a scarce survivor.    [sr][ph:L]
