Another small, but key piece of artillery gear- the pad that would be attached to the end of the pole on a limber pulling an artillery piece, caisson, etc. A pole attached to the carriage itself extended between the near team of horses, the “wheel team,” and this was to prevent the lead horses being injured by its end.
This is made of heavy brown leather, several layers firmly stuffed, with a hole on one end forming a collar for the end of the pole and a T-shaped bolt to pass through it and be secured on the far side by a leather thong to hold it in place and permit its easy removal. The 1861 Ordnance Manual notes that they should be taken off the pole and stored under cover when the carriage is not in use.
The leather is in very good condition, medium brown in color, with good surface showing just light scuffs showing as a lighter brown. The T-bolt and thong are present. We see no markings. This comes from an old, respected collection, much of which was directly acquired from Bannerman’s Island or their Blue Point, Long Island operation in the early 1960s. See the reprint of their 1927 catalog to get an idea of the range and scale of their offerings. Manuals do not seem to distinguish these by the particular gun they served, but a collector’s note with it identified it as coming from the limber for a 12-Pdr. gun.
This is a very strong example of a necessary piece of artillery horse equipment. [sr][ph:L]
