This is a sheet copper cup measuring 3” tall and 3-1/2” in diameter with folded and soldered seams and an attached handle. These were used in filling artillery shells with powder, used in conjunction with a copper funnel- all to avoid any chance of a spark from an iron utensil. The dimensions fit Gibbon’s chart for a measure of one pound of powder and the presence of a handle indicates intended use in a magazine, with those intended for use within an artillery “park” made without handles so that they could be nested.
This is a rare survivor and in very good condition, showing just some bends to the handle, a slight ding to the bottom edge on one side, and a few small spots of thin verdigris on the outside, with a wider, but thin area inside the cup bottom.
This comes from a artillery portion of a sophisticated, older collection that includes some nowadays near impossible-to-find artillery implements and tools acquired from Bannerman’s in the early 1960s from their Blue Point, Long Island office, or directly off the island. Please see our other offerings for an equally rare copper funnel used in filling shells as well. [sr][ph:L]
