This tool is illustrated in Arms and Equipment of the Union as a wooden fuze plug auger. These are understood by most collectors to be used simply to ream out wood fuze plugs, commonly used in seacoast mortars and the like, that had become swollen from moisture and would not accept the paper time fuze. Gibbon’s Artillerist’s Manual describes a “fuze auger” with wood handle and steel bit that would be fitted with a sliding adjustable head that could be used to shorten the “composition column” of a fuze already set in place in order to readjust the burn time.
This is in very good condition. We show the illustration from “Arms and Equipment of the Union,” but refer interested parties to the various online discussions in collector and artillery forums. [sr][ph:L]
