This comes from the artillery section of an older collection we are handling, much of which was acquired from the famous Bannerman military surplus operation in the early 1960s after it had shut its New York City store down, but was still doing business from its Blue Point Long Island office and from its renowned island.
This is an original Civil War artillery wood fuze plug/adapter with an original Civil War 25-second fuze. Gibbon’s Civil War Artillerist’s Manual notes this simple method of fuzing for an artillery shell, using a paper time fuze in wood plug, was an old one and it likely seemed primitive by comparison with more modern, sophisticated fuzing systems, but it was reliable and Gibbon noted it was still used for extremely long range guns, particularly seacoast mortars. The fuze with it is an original Civil War paper fuze stamped in ink, “25 SECOND FUZE” and marked in ink down its lengths in 1-second burn-time increments so that the gunner could more finely adjust the burn time for the distance and flight time of the shell, the optimal effect being, at least from the gunner’s point of view, to have the shell burst just over the target, raining down shell fragments.
Both pieces are in excellent condition and would be great additions to an artillery display. [sr][ph:L]
