A heavy canvas water bucket with an overall tarred finish, stenciled on the front in large white capitals "BATTERY" arched over the letter "I." The body is formed of heavy canvas joined with a single vertical seam, closed at the bottom by a separate circular base sewn in place, and finished at the mouth with a rolled and bound rim. A pair of iron rings is set into tabs at either side of the rim to take the handle. The original tarred canvas strap handle survives only in part: it is broken, with approximately half missing, the remaining section still attached at one ring.

The white stencil paint has crazed and flaked and has toned with age, but the lettering remains clearly legible. Scattered traces of the same white paint appear on the reverse.

Buckets of this pattern were part of the working kit of a field battery, used for watering teams and for the many other jobs that called for water around the guns, limbers and caissons. The unit stenciling is what sets this example apart. Most such buckets were used up and discarded, and surviving examples with a battery designation are seldom encountered.

The tarred surface remains supple and largely intact, with creasing and dents throughout from years of being folded and stored. The stenciled lettering shows crazing, toning and paint loss. Handle broken and about half missing. A split is present at the edge of the base, visible from the interior. Interior shows wear and soiling consistent with use.

Measures pprox. 9 in. high; approx. 10 in. diameter at the mouth.

A scarce, unit-marked piece of field artillery equipment with strong display presence.  [ss][ph:L]
