A tough-to-find piece of artillery equipment, and rather vital if you intended to hit anything- the front sight for a 24-pounder field howitzer. A narrow blade sight, made of steel, meant to be detachable to as to avoid damage, and very nicely marked on the blade for the specific type of gun. A bronze gun with chambered breech, 5.82-inch bore, and based upon a 12-pounder version adopted in 1841, the 24-pounder was adopted in 1844, and was intended to be grouped in batteries with 12-pounder guns. They were considered to be most effective at shorter ranges with shell and canister. US production ceased mid-war, with gun basically made superfluous by the 1857 Napoleon 12-Pounder. The sight is steel and in very good condition, with sharp markings. This comes from the artillery section of an older, large collection, much of which was acquired from the well-known Bannerman military surplus firm. [sr][ph:L]
