This book comes from the library of the Sedgwick Post #1 in Norwich, Connecticut and is so marked by a bookplate pasted to the inside front cover. Book is bound in a brown paper wrapper from the period and marked with the number “10” on the spine which matches the number written in period ink on the bookplate.

The full title of the volume is “THE HAND-BOOK OF ARTILLERY, FOR THE SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES (ARMY AND MILITIA)” by Capt. Joseph Roberts, 4^th Regt. Art. U. S. Army. Book was published by D. Van Nostrand in 1861.

The book meas. approx. 4.00 x 6.00 inches and runs 179 pages.

The paper cover has numerous stains and edge chipping but is still solid. Title is handwritten in period ink on the spine. The paper cover has done its job and has protected the actual cover with is red paper with gold embossed title with crossed cannons in a circle over a pyramid of cannonballs. Binding is holding but is weary.

Title page has a period ink ID that looks to read “E. M. ELLS, MAY 30, 1861.” The name is not clearly written and may be incorrect but the date is clear.
