During the war, pro-Southern school books for children were published in the Confederate states. Cover and title page read, “CHAUDRON’S SPELLING BOOK, CAREFULLY PREPARED FOR FAMILY AND SCHOOL USE, BY A. De V. CHAUDRON, MOBILE: S.H. GOETZEL, 1865”. Chaudron’s speller was originally published in 1863, this book is the fifth edition. First end paper has an illustration of a printing press. Reverse side has an image of a ship with Confederate flag flying at the top over the sails, and U.S. flag at the deck. Introduction states that, “In former times the country was overrun with an endless number of competition school books in every line of instruction. The present condition of the country has delivered us from this evil.”

Lessons begin by teaching the alphabet and vowel blends, then lead to a list of spelling words on each page with sentences below to apply the words learned. Woodcut illustrations are shown throughout book.

Light brown cloth covered boards have cardstock leafs that unfold to house spelling booklet. Title is present on spine in gold gilt.

Book measures 7” by 4 ¼”. Text contains 48 pages. Pages are tightly stitched together. Pages have lightly yellowed with age. Overall, cover and booklet are in outstanding condition with only very light wear.  [SL][ph:L]
