During the war, pro-Southern school books for children were published in the Confederate states. This book contains one hundred lessons. Each has a list of spelling words and a Christian based, character building story. Title page reads, “OUR OWN SECOND READER; FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES. BY RICHARD STERLING, A.M. PRINCIPAL OF EDGEWORTH FEMALE ACADEMY AND J.D. CAMPBELL, A.M. PROF. OF MATHEMATICS AND RHETORIC.” GREENSBORO, N.C. PUBLISHED BY STERLING, CAMPBELL & ALBRIGHT. RICHMOND, VA, W. HARGRAVE WHITE, 1862”.

This volume has faded brown covered boards which are very worn. Much of the top layer on both front and back boards has flaked off so that most of the wording is gone. Names inscribed in pencil are present on front end papers, one dating 1863.

Book measures 7” by 4 ½”. Text contains 168 pages, with pages 83/84 and 101/102 missing. Pages are loose from binding at spine. Pages have yellowed with age and show spotting, yet are totally readable. This book would make a great addition to a Confederate library, or a collection of children’s items from the war era. This coat is the epitome of a Civil War Union general’s field uniform, a blouse following the popular sack coat pattern of the period, looking somewhat like an enlisted man’s fatigue blouse and suitable for campaign wear, but with a double row of… (1179-281). Learn More »
