The full title of this work is “ANTIETAM TO APPOMATTOX WITH 118TH PENNA. VOLS., CORN EXCHANGE REGIMENT; WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF MARCHES, BATTLES AND SKIRMISHES, TOGETHER WITH A COMPLETE ROSTER AND SKETCHES OF OFFICERS AND MEN, COMPILED FROM OFFICIAL RECORDS, LETTERS AND DIARIES” published by J. L. Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1892.

This hardbound volume is wrapped blue cloth with the word “CHARGE!!” in gold ink on the cover with the figure of a charging infantryman done in black with “118th P.V.” in gold. Spine has an ear of corn over “EXCHANGE REGIMENT” with a knapsack, musket and canteen done in gold. Covers are in very good condition and show only minor surface dirt from age and storage.

Volume meas. approx. 6.00 x 9.00 inches and runs 746 pages with roster. Volume has numerous black and white drawings and photographs of members of the regiment along with several maps.

Binding is weak. Front signature is starting to go. Title page is loose. Back signature is good and despite its flaws the book is holding together.

The 188th Pennsylvania spent its entire service with the 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac serving from Antietam to Appomattox losing 10 officers and 243 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease.

Dean S. Thomas was known as a onetime Gettysburg Battlefield Guide and early relic hunter as well as the founder, owner, and operator of Thomas Publications. He was also the author of many books related to Civil War ammunition and projectiles. [ad][ph:L]
