Published in 1859 by Oliver Ditson and Company of Boston, this large paper booklet taught students of the drum proper technique, timing, and theory.
A section of the book provides exercises for various types of drums and styles of drumming, including both contemporary and marshal. Included are various stroke rolls, instruction for playing with wind and string instruments, and tips on reading music. The latter half of the book is devoted to sheet music of staple songs and scores of the 1850’s.
The front cover is a heavy paper, bound by a pasted cloth binding. Some wear is noted on the front, with small tears along the lower edges, lower corner loss, and two sections of paper loss along the right edge. A 1.5” tear is present just below the binding. The rear cover is a catalogue summary, printed on the same heavy paper as the front. Relatively minor corner loss is evident, with three small tears along the lower edge. The first 11 pages show light staining, which does not affect readability or presentation. The remaining are largely free of foxing and staining. There is minor corner loss and rolling through page 14 – typical of a book of this age, intended for active instruction and heavy use. Overall measurements are 10.2” x 7”.
If you are a historic musician or want to collect something with period insight into an important skill, this is the piece. In a short time, the lessons of this book would be put to use during the Civil War in unprecedented ways among volunteer soldiers. [cm][ph:L]
