Birney began the was as lieutenant colonel of the 23rd Pennsylvania and rose to brigadier general while commanding a brigade in Phil Kearney’s division of the 3rd Corps. Upon Kearney’s death, he took command of Kearney’s own division in the Army of the Potomac and was promoted to Major General for his leadership at Chancellorsville. He commanded the 3rd Corps after Sickles was wounded at Gettysburg. This well-written biography in 1867, shortly after Birney’s own death, is an excellent source for study of the Army of the Potomac.
