“This work fully merits Douglas S. Freeman’s classification as one of the most indispensable works for the Army of Northern Virginia” is the commentary of the editors of Civil War Books (1967). Compared to the various state compilations of the post-war period, these five volumes contain the detailed histories of every North Carolina organization written by members of their respective commands based on personal experience from 1894 to 1900. They were published by the state in 1901 after having been published first in newspapers of the respective sections of the stat where e the regiments were organized to be proof-read by other ex-soldiers to comment on and verify their correctness.

Comprising some 4,000 pages of text, in addition to the regimentals, there are histories of the North Carolina brigades, list of generals and other officers from North Carolina, detailed personal accounts of battles these men had fought in and/or the prison life they endured (primarily at Johnson’s Island and Ft. Delaware) along with the military organization of the state and various home-guard and medical support services. Several hundred portraits specified to each regiment’s story as well as some maps and a full name index add value to this remarkable compilation.

This 5-volume set is in near excellent condition. All bindings are tight, and the pages are clean with no chips, marks, or tears to note. Each volume measures 9.25” by 6” and contain roughly 800 pages each.  [cla][ph:L]
