This book is the compilation of the letters and diaries of one farm family living in Page County outside of Luray in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia when the winds of war swept through in the Spring of 1861. The painful news is revealed in the actual written words and experiences of a mother and father, their four military-age sons, and their wives or girlfriends as they lived through the fervor, emotions, harsh realities, and failing sentiments of what happened to ordinary people in an extraordinary time. Three of the brothers, all in Company H, 33rd Virginia of the Stonewall Brigade, are killed – one at Manassas, one at Gettysburg, and the third at Winchester in September of 1864. You will get to know them through their writings and then experience the young lives lost as the years pass in this well-researched book. This is the real story of the cost of war.
This hardbound book retains its original jacket, which is in good condition, as is the rest of the book. Approximately 205 pages. All pages are clean with no tears or folds. Binding is tight. [cla][ph:L]
