This book is the author’s own story “simply told and intensely interesting of his four years’ acquaintance with all the fortunes of war” while serving as a lieutenant in the Company C of the 9th Virginia Cavalry (which was commanded by Beale’s father). His attention to detail recalls the salient efforts of Lee’s Cavalry from JEB Stuart’s famous ride around the Army of the Potomac in 1862, through the northern invasions at Antietam in 1862 and at Gettysburg in 1863, as well as the intense fight at Brandy Station that preceded it. All the 1864 actions are covered with poignant recollections of wounds and deaths of comrades as the fighting goes on until the author himself is knocked out of the war by a severe wound to the leg on February 6, 1865, at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run. His concern for his fellow soldiers is evident in his battle accounts, as he went on to become a Baptist minister after the war.
This book is in very good condition, and it is covered in mylar. All pages are clean with no detracting marks to note. There is minor foxing to the top of the pages which is only noticeable when the book is closed. Book measures 7.5 x 5 inches and is 248 pages. [cla][ph:L]
