Along Ayres Avenue, just before it makes its loop, you will find the 148th Pennsylvania’s monument looking out over the Wheatfield. As impressive as the monument is at this prominent location on the Gettysburg Battlefield, even more impressive is its regimental history. “Teeming with personal incidences and commentaries, this thick study is an extraordinary source from Chancellorsville through the Appomattox campaign.” And “One of the best regimental histories ever compiled” is the critiques of Civil War Books. “A regimental history which is widely consulted and highly regarded…belongs in any list of the best Union unit histories” is the review of the Union Bookshelf. Also by reading the many company-level accounts, you will get to experience descriptively the tumult of charging with Cross’s famous brigade of Cadwell’s Division, 2nd Corps to “Clear the Wheatfield” on the afternoon of July 2nd, 1863.

The price of this regiment paid for its battlefield valor across its time of service may be illustrated by the fact that the 148th Pa. suffered the 14th highest percentage of men killed in battle from over 2,000 Federal regiments, according to Fox. The title page states that this history was “written by the comrades” since more than 50 of its veterans contributed diaries, letters and reminiscences, as well as prison and hospital narratives, to broaden the account of their service to over 1,000 pages.
