This first edition book is a rarity – a memorial as history of the 14th New Hampshire. Published in 1882 by Franklin Press: Rand, Avery, and Company of Boston, it is covered in a royal blue cloth with an embossed, gold-filled 19th Corps badge and text at the top of the spine.
Some fading is noted along the length of the spine, but the board areas retain their vivid shade of blue. Rounding of the board corners is noted at each point, with some varying wear to those corresponding sections of cloth cover. Some staining and light markings are visible on the front and rear cover areas but the cloth remains complete and still presents nicely. Separation and light tearing of cloth layers is observed at the upper and lower edges of the spine, with a stain partially obscuring the end of the word “MEMORIAL” on the spine’s face.
The interior of the cover is finished in a light navy-blue paper with a glossy finish, and the flyleaves remain blank with light water staining. Preceding the title page is a photographic portrait of General Sheridan, under whose command the regiment or detachments thereof served in the Deep South and Virginia.
The title page reads “A MEMORIAL OF THE GREAT REBELLION: BEING A HISTORY OF THE FOURTEENTH REGIMENT NEW HAMPSHIRE VOLUNTEERS, COVERING ITS THREE YEARS OF SERVICE, WITH ORIGINAL SKETCHES OF ARMY LIFE 1861 – 1865. ISSUED BY THE COMMITTEE OF PUBLICATION.” Copyright is credited to F. H. BUFFUM. 1882.
The pages show some darkening in sections, but all sketches are complete. The binding is secure, save for a separated bur complete section of pages near the center.
This is quite a scarce book, with most copies going to members of the regiment or friends and family members of the men. A handsome and worthy addition to any Civil War collection or library. [cm][ph:L]
