This fine book shows minimal wear. Covered in a brown cloth, horizontal patterning with black fill is embossed across the upper and lower front cover while the rear remains blank. The spine is embossed with black and gold fill in the form of a stylized unit veteran medal relief blended with the title. The author’s name is likewise gold-filled at the bottom edge of the spine (“CAPT. L JACKMAN / HISTORIAN”). Relatively small areas of minor color variation are noted, primarily in the form of subtle loss to the brown finish, likely from rubbing or separation from another tightly packed book at some point.
The inside cover and first flyleaf are a floral-patterned paper, while the next few fly pages are blank, save for a prominent “HEADQUARTERS / CONCORD/ DEPT. N.H.G.A.R. (Department of New Hampshire Grand Army of the Republic). Some acid-related darkening is noted on the first few flyleaves. The GAR stamps continue to the title page. A nice lithograph of General Burnside is complete and precedes the title page - a tribute to their old Corps, Department, and Wing commander. All binding remains tight.
The book was published in 1891, in Concord, New Hampshire, by the Republican Press Association, located at Railroad Square.
The 6th Regiment New Hampshire Infantry, also known as "The Bully Sixth", was organized at Keene and mustered in on November 27, 1861. The length of service was for 3 years and 8 months. They were mustered out on the 17th of July, 1865.
The regiment saw service in both primary theaters of the Civil War at the Battle of Groveton, Second Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Chantilly, the Maryland Campaign, Battle of South Mountain, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Siege of Vicksburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Battle of Totopotomoy Creek, Battle of Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, Second Battle of Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, Battle of Hatcher's Run, Third Battle of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign.
Considering the stamps on the first few pages, this book was likely handled by many a New Hampshire Veteran. Such a direct link as this to our Honored Union Dead and Veterans of the Civil War is something very special. [cm][ph:L]
