This second series printing of the History of the Seventeenth N.H. Infantry was published in 1898 by The Seventeenth New Hampshire Veterans Association of Concord and printed by the Rumford Press, also of Concord.

The cover is a Royal-to-French blue with blank front and rear.  Gold-filled embossed text along the spine is complete and vivid.  Some type of aggressive adhesive, or its removal, has damaged a 1” x 0.5” at the base of the spine, near the “SECOND SERIES” text.  Mild wear to the cover’s edges and the spine and corners is noted.

The flyleaf is signed in bold, black ink, “To The New Hampshire Club in Boston / No. 6 Walnut St. / Henry O. Kent / Dec 4, 1903”.  Henry O. Kent served as the 17th’s Colonel during the full term of its service from 1862-early 1863, when it was consolidated to form the 2nd New Hampshire. After the war, he became a high-ranking Naval Officer and a Republican politician.  He lived for another six years, remaining active in the affairs of GAR Post 16 of New Hampshire all the while.

The interior cover features a pasted ex-library card, dated 1934.  Cover separation from the cover page is noted, as well as tearing along the bound edges of the dedication and title pages.  Given the mild discoloration of the first few pages along the binding, the loose nature of the front cover from the first few pages, and the location of the tearing, a repair may have been attempted some time ago.  Most importantly, the signature leaf is in excellent condition and the remaining condition complaints are minor.  All page edges and corners are sharp.  Dimensions are 6.1” x 9.1” x 1”.

A very neat piece for the collector of New Hampshire or Union Veteran items.  [cm][ph:L]
