A well-used copy of Volume 1 of 3 volume set of infantry tactic officially adopted by the US Army in 1862. Green cloth bound with gilt title on spine. This was published by Van Nostrand in New York in 1863. Pretty much any infantry officer, or aspiring officer, was going to have at least Volume 1, the key volume, containing the “School of the Soldier” and “School of the Company,” as well as instructions for skirmishing, music calls, etc. If you want the inside view of the organization, drill, discipline and tactical maneuvering of a infantry company in the Civil War, this is the place to start.
This has two names in it: “G.A. Morley / Reading Ctr. / N.Y.” (written in the front and back,) and “J.H. Gregory” in an ornate cartouche, also in the front. We do not find a G.A. Morely in the New York rosters and “J.H. Gregory” offers rather too many possibilities to narrow it down, though it does look like he was the first owner.
The book is in fair condition, clearly showing use, waterstains, etc., but since these manuals were intended to be carried in the field for study and quick reference by officers just as new to their duties as enlisted men, these are rather nice, telling signs that it did not spend its life sitting on a bookshelf in a higher ranking officer’s study and would make a nice accompanying piece to a display of a typical officer’s field gear and personal effects.
