"Obsolete currency" is the term given to paper money that was issued by thousands of different banks, companies, merchants, and municipalities. During the mid-1860s, these notes were taxed out of circulation when the Federal government started to issue paper money.
People collect obsolete notes for many reasons, notes from their home state, because of unusual denominations, or interesting engravings like coins, trains, Indians, ships, slaves, flags, and important personalities.
