The Memoirs of Fouché is a seminal—albeit controversial—insider account of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, purportedly written by Joseph Fouché, Napoleon’s infamous Minister of Police. The memoirs provide a rare, first-hand perspective on the inner workings of French government during the Reign of Terror, the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the eventual Bourbon Restoration.  The text focuses on political maneuvering, personal survival during constant regime changes, court intrigues, and the moral complexities of the era.

The early book features pressed boards and a papered cover. The paper-covered spine retains some of its original label (“Memoirs of Fouche”).  Expected cover wear is noted and expected given the book’s age, but remains complete and secure.  A penciled label of Fouche’s full name is featured on the title page, along with an 1817 copyright date and the credit of publisher “M. CAREY AND SON” of Philadelphia. Hand-made cotton paper pages are in good condition, with defined, original rough edges.  All binding is tight and all pages are present.  Some scattered notations are observed – a “75” in oxidized ink on the inside of the front cover, a partial signature and various minor writing on the inside of the rear cover, as well as a library discard stamp. Dimensions are 4.7” x 7.7”.
