Offered here is a highly desirable, original 1902 first edition of the official regimental history for the famous 127th Pennsylvania Volunteers, affectionately known throughout the Commonwealth as the "Dauphin County Regiment." Published by the Report Publishing Company out of Lebanon, PA, this elusive volume was formally authorized and compiled by the unit's surviving veterans through the 127th Regimental Association.
The physical book is a standard hardcover octavo volume spanning 335 pages. The text itself is uniquely constructed, heavily utilizing the primary source text from four fragmentary soldier diaries along with retrospective veteran accounts penned nearly forty years after the firing on Fort Sumter. It offers a chronological history of the regiment, starting from its initial organizational structure at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg during August of 1862, detailing full company rosters, and following the men right up through their eventual muster out in May of 1863. The core is dedicated to the regiment's heavy combat actions while attached to the Third Brigade, Second Division, Second Army Corps. The text covers their trial by fire at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862—specifically their desperate, costly charge against Marye's Heights—as well as their subsequent actions in the grueling Chancellorsville Campaign at Salem Heights and Banks' Ford.
The red cloth cover remains in good condition overall, with some surface soot and mild wear at the low right front corner and each edge of the spine. Inside cover retains a partial label with a 1917 date and a newer ownership label tag (R. Hartwell). Binding remains tight, with one section at center slightly pulled (but still very secure). All pages are complete and in good condition, with virtually no wear or discoloration. Gilded embossed spine text remains brilliant and complete. Cover dimensions measure 6” x 8”.
A very necessary book for students of Pennsylvania’s enormous role in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. [cm][ph:L]
