This fine booklet is covered in brown velvet with an ivory Union Shield inlay at center front.  A brass frame binds the edges of each cover, stopping at the spine, and closes securely with an original brass clasp.  The flyleaf is inscribed Julia Olive Farnum / May 23rd, 1863.  While a number of records match Julia Farnum, we cannot know which one is the Julia in question.  Likewise, too many Civil War soldiers had that last name to truly narrow the possibilities.

The pocket-sized book was published by Appleton of New York and officially titled “THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER, OR PSALMS OF DAVID.” Condition is excellent, save for a page separation at the binding between the table of contents and the title page. All pages are clean and complete, with no overt wear or damage, and boldly printed text. Dimensions are 2.3” x 3.6”.

An excellent, personal artifact for the Civil War collector.  [cm][ph:L]
