Published in limited numbers in 1865 by S. R. Gray of Albany, this work chronicles the history of the 5th New York Cavalry throughout its service during the Civil War.  The 5th New York’s combat record spans 1862-1865 and encompasses much of the bloodiest fighting in the Eastern Theater.

The book is covered in green cloth with gold gilt embossments. Corner wear is noted, along with a tear along the left top blade of the cover embossment and some cracking at the bottom of the spine. A more modern copy of the author’s plate portrait (Regimental Chaplain Louis Boudrye) has been pasted near the spine carefully between the flyleaf and title page – likely to replace the original, which were sometimes cut for framing.  The same was done to a second portrait near the book’s midpoint – but the original is trimmed and tucked under the original tissue separation. Minimal foxing is observed only through the first few pages – all are crisp and the rest are clean. 358 pages in all.  Dimensions are 5” x 7.5”.  A tag on the first flyleaf denotes the book as formerly of the collection of Charles English – proprietor of the Old Stone House Museum in New York.

Ideal for the collector of fine Civil War books or rare regimental histories.   [cm] [PH:L]
